The exam relaxation room in the Merensky 2 Library during October and November 2018

Posted on September 01, 2018

From 24 October to 20 November 2018, the Marketing Office once more made the seminar room on level 4 in the Merensky 2 Library available to students in need of a social space during the examination period.

According to the feedback received from students making use of this space the activities that they enjoyed the most in this room include: relaxing, colouring in, enjoying their own food in the library and building the puzzle. Some students enjoy the informal atmosphere and even do some studying here.

The students’ imaginations ran wild when asked for possible improvements! High on their wish lists were soft background music, more board games, more space, more comfortable seats and a controllable air-conditioning system (as they complain that the room’s temperature was too cold) and some students begged for food and refreshments.

A few students were interviewed and asked to share why they would choose this venue compared to other social spaces on campus and this was their feedback:

Nolwazi Radebe:”It’s a more relaxed study environment and we can eat in this room. It’s more air-conditioned compared to the study centre. We study here and then take breaks again. A classmate was here and he told me about this room and I decided to check it out.”

Kefilwe Shongoane:”The study centre is a bit stuffy, so I am here because this room keeps me awake. When you take a study break in the library, you watch YouTube videos, and then you end up losing track of time, but here in this room, it’s easier to remind yourself, break is over, it’s time to study.”
