Seminar on “Best practices for promoting library resources and services”

Posted on September 01, 2018

On November 21, 2018, the DLS hosted an online seminar entitled “Best Practices for promoting library resources and services” in the library’s auditorium in collaboration with Goldsmiths, University of London (UoL).

The seminar was part of the initiative that seeks to address DLS’s “Terms of reference” for exploring viable and sustainable partnerships that will collaborate towards enhancing quality, efficiency and sustainability of delivery of information services. The seminar was presented over the Vidyo video collaborating tool.

The purpose of the seminar was to learn from each other through knowledge sharing aimed at learning other competencies to enhance our services as well as to begin what could be a series of online seminars to come. We are indeed looking into having more of this kind of seminars with UoL.

The seminar attendees and participants were representative of the two organizations and included three presenters from UP and one from UoL. First on the agenda was an overview by Ms Suzy Nyakale of the purpose of the seminar. Mr Mark Preston of the University of London then introduced his Goldsmith colleagues. The following colleagues gave presentations connected with the theme of the seminar.

  1. Embedded teaching @ Faculty of Health Sciences (Ms Myleen Oosthuizen)
  2. Patent searching as part of a literature survey ( Ms Sunette Steynberg)
  3. Best student support practices at the Education Library (Ms Liesl Stieger)
  4. Online reading lists (Ms Eve Jamieson)

Interesting discussions followed the presentations, an indication that colleagues wanted to engage further with one another. The balance of the day consisted of UP colleagues enjoying one another’s company over lunch.

This is the feedback we received from colleagues in UoL, Goldsmiths “I think we all found the sessions useful. We would be interested in collaborating on a second session if possible and in putting forward some further presentations on the subject of academic liaison, which we would be happy to share and discuss with you”.
