The Copyright Seminar took place on the 22nd of October 2018 in the Merensky 2 Library Auditorium. The seminar was hosted by the Copyright Office and presented by Mr. Lucas Nhlangulela. It was a purpose driven seminar where the aim was to make the University staff and students aware of the importance of complying to copyright policies and regulations as set out by the University. By doing this, we aimed at making sure that everyone on campus understood what copyright was all about, how to make applications for copyright clearances, how to get hold of the Copyright Office and under which conditions material could be used without any copyright restriction.
Mr. Nhlangulela spoke at length about the implications of noncompliance and the risks associated with copyright infringements. He also mentioned the importance of seeking advice from the Copyright Office when using copyrighted material.
Emphasis was especially placed on the use of internet material on ClickUP. As the University is increasingly focusing on improving the ways in which students are taught,, copyright issues have become part of the challenges teaching staff need to deal with in preparing teaching material – especially as it relates to the use of online material, such as YouTube videos, Google Maps and images from the internet.
Most attendees indicated they had found the event valuable, as the information was very useful and applicable to their everyday teaching and learning environments.
We hope that the Copyright Seminar will become an annual event on the DLS calendar. The Copyright Office is located on the second floor of the Merensky 2 Library and Mr. Lucas Nhlangulela can be contacted at: 012 420 6908 or [email protected].
