SA jazz musician Hugh Masekela remembered in UP libraries exhibitions

It was fitting that exhibitions to commemorate the life and achievements of Hugh Ramapolo Masekela (1939-2018) were set up in both the Music library and in the Merensky 2 library on the Hatfield campus by the Humanities Faculty library. This is because of his influence, his work, what he represented, and what he stood for – his significance is wider than just music. Masekela was known also for his stance against Apartheid, and he lived overseas in political exile for approximately thirty years.

That is not to detract from his musical achievements, for he was honoured in various ways for his music: by means of honorary doctorates, a lifetime award, international and local awards, and nominations.

The library exhibitions consisted of material in our libraries on Masekela’s life and work, including recordings of his music. Some titles are:
