Addressing modern day challenges to stay pain free at work

Posted on August 01, 2017

In celebration of Librarians' Day, trained physiotherapist Annelie van Heerden addressed library staff members on the issue of neck pain on Tuesday 18 July 2017.

Annelie van Heerden is a qualified physiotherapist and has her own private practice in the East of Pretoria. She also works as a part-time lecturer and clinical supervisor at the University of Pretoria. Her special interests include the treatment of neck and back problems as well as persistent pain. She is currently finalizing her Master’s degree at the University of Pretoria with a dissertation titled: “Cervical pain and the association with scapula and cervical dyskinesis in grade 7 learners in private schools in Tshwane.”

According to Annelie neck pain is the fourth most common disease in terms of years living with disease. It affects up to 30% of the population on a yearly basis. In most cases neck pain will clear up on its own but research has shown that up to 50% of individuals could experience recurrence of neck pain throughout their lives. There are many factors contributing to neck pain. Factors that can effectively be addressed are sitting positions behind your desk as well as neck posture. Annelie also discussed:

  • What is good posture?

  • Why is it important?

  • How can I prevent neck pain? (Exercises, work station positions?)

  • How do I manage my neck pain if I already have pain?

  • Which treatment options have been proven to be effective? (Physiotherapy, medicine, exercises, etc.?)

After the talk, staff members were treated on vetkoek and mince – courtesy of the Library Executive team members.
