PRETORIA - When life redirected Kgetsi Khomotso Nkoana’s plans, she chose not to stand still. Born in Limpopo andraised in Pretoria, she persevered – and graduated with a Higher Certificate in Sports Science from UPOnline, the University of Pretoria’s (UP) premier online education service.

Nkoana, who received her qualification during UP’s 2025 Spring Graduations season, says it’s a course that has already opened doors in the sports industry and reignited her passion for learning. “When I unexpectedly faced a gapyear, I was determined not to let it go to waste. Staying at home with no clear direction did not align with my ambitions, so I actively searched for opportunities to stay productive and move forward.”

What she found was UP’s fully online Higher Certificate in Sports Science, a programme that immediately resonatedwith her lifelong love for sport. “At first, I did not fully understand the details of the programme, but the word ‘sports’ spoke to me. I have always wanted to build a career in the field, so I saw it as the perfect stepping stone towards becoming a physiotherapist or biokineticist.”

Like many first-time online learners, Nkoana had doubts about whether the experience would measure up to traditionalstudy. Those doubts quickly faded. “We are often taught to view education as a linear path from school to university towork. Not being in a conventional degree programme made me underestimate the value of online qualifications at first.However, once I began, I realised its legitimacy and worth. The lecturers were hands-on, the support was excellent, and the programme gave us early exposure to the sports industry.”

The course spanned nearly two years, blending academic knowledge with practical experience. For Nkoana, the flexibility was invaluable. “While studying, I was able to launch and grow my baking business. Online learning gave me the chance to balance academics with entrepreneurship. I would strongly encourage others to consider it. It requires discipline, but the freedom it offers is worth it.”

She is now completing an internship at UP’s sport department, TuksSport, supporting clients and players. This is easier for her to do because she already had experience with hands-on coaching, first aid and umpiring. “The qualification has given me a well-rounded understanding of the industry. It prepared me for different roles in a sporting environment, and I am grateful for how many opportunities it has opened.”

Her career aspirations have also sharpened. “Initially, I wanted to go into physiotherapy, but as I studied, I discoveredbiokinetics and fell in love with it. My passion has always been in rehabilitation and physical wellness, and I want to work with sports teams to help athletes reach peak performance and sustain long careers.”

Beyond career ambitions, graduation has brought a profound personal meaning for Nkoana and family. “This experience restored my hope and reignited my love for learning. It reminded me of the ambition I once had but had momentarily lost sight of. For my family, it is a reminder that everyone’s journey is unique, and that trusting God’s redirection can lead to greater opportunities than we could imagine. For us, this is both a celebration of what the Lord continues to do in our lives, and a reminder to never stop believing in ourselves.”

For someone who once feared a “wasted” year, graduation marks not only an academic milestone but also a journey of resilience, discovery and renewed purpose.
