Sexual Assault Awareness Month(SAAM) is a campaign centered around sexual assault awareness and it takes place annually in April. SAAM aims to raise public awareness about sexual violences and educate communities about how to prevent sexual assault.
Centre for Sexualities, AIDS & Gender (Just Leaders) and Transformation Office (#SpeakOutUP) commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Week by raising awareness and educating the university community on sexual harassment. This year the focus will be on digital sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment can manifest itself in different forms such as aesthetic appreciation, active mental groping and sexual assault etc. Digital sexual harassment encompasses a wide range of behaviors that use digital content that such as images, videos and messages. In an effort to combat digital sexual harassment, the University of Pretoria has a social media policy. This policy is not aimed at restraining academic freedom and sharing ideas. However, it aims to regulate the use of the university’s social media channel. And to inform all users of social media of their roles and responsibility within the digital space.
