Murray Coetzee to Captain TuksCricket

Posted on August 06, 2015

On Thursday 6 August 2015, Assupol TuksCricket announced that Murray Coetzee will be the Tuks 1 Captain for the 2015/2016 season.

After coming back from a hand injury, the 2014/2015 season was incredible for Coetzee. He was named Player of the Tournament at the 2014 USSA A Cricket Week after he scored 202 runs during the week at an average of 101 with a highest score of 119. He played a leading role in securing victory for Tuks. He was also selected for the SA USSA side that played in the CSA Future Cup in Kimberly in April this year. At the CSA Future Cup Murray scored 161 runs at an average of 40 and made a high score of 79 with a strike rate of 152.

At the Varsity Cricket week in Potchefstroom in February 2015, he scored 272 runs during the week at an average of 34 and a highest score of 97. His all-round ability as a keeper-batsman played a massive role in many of TuksCricket's victories last season.

Assupol TuksCricket Head of Programme and Head Coach, Pierre de Bruyn, said, “I have no doubt that Murray will lead the team with pride, his leadership as a senior player has really stood out. He has gained an enormous amount of respect from his teammates and coaches. We wish him all the best.”

Murray is an old boy of Pretoria Boys High School and while he was a school he was selected for the Northerns team for the 2011 Khaya Majola Coke Week, thereafter he was selected for the Titan’s Cubs Team in 2012 and the SA u19 team in 2012 and 2013. He continued his cricket at Assupol TuksCricket in 2012 after school and is currently studying a MBChB at the University of Pretoria.

After the announcement Coetzee said, “I'm excited for another successful season at Tuks as I know there will be a bit more pressure on me now than in the past to keep TuksCricket's flag and brand flying high after the hard work put in over years past. I feel I am ready for, and up to the challenge and look forward to taking TuksCricket from strength to strength with the help of an excellent management team and a very strong playing squad to support me. I am honoured by the opportunity and look forward to another challenging season to come.”

Coetzee’s father, world renowned urologist, Dr Lance Coetzee, is a former Tuks 1 captain who played for TuksCricket during the 1980s. Dr Coetzee was also a SA Universities and Northern Transvaal player during that time.
