In a very tough semi-final against the university team from India, which went down to the final over needing four runs to win, the winning runs were hit off the first ball of the over to secure our spot in the final of the tournament. This was the first time South Africa and South African universities were represented at this exciting T20 tournament.
Assupol TuksCricket came up against the West Indian team, whom they had beaten in their final pool game earlier in the week.
With the final promising to have all the makings of a good contest, Assupol TuksCricket won the toss and elected to bat, putting up a good score and making the West Indian team have to chase 189 runs to win.
The Tuks team came out firing and in the usual fashion, which secured them the place in the finals. They tightened up their bowling and fielding, putting pressure on the opposition.
With the West Indies requiring 45 runs off the last over, the writing was on the wall, and Assupol TuksCricket, representing South Africa in this international tournament, were crowned winners and world champions,
This amazing achievement completes the already successful last three years of the Tuks Cricket Club, having won the National Cricket Club Championship earlier in the year and the National USSA tournament in December 2013, and being crowned Team of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards two weeks ago.
Congratulations must go to Head Coach Pierre de Bruyn, the various other TuksCricket coaches involved, the management and administration teams of the club, sport science and medical staff who supported the team in its preparation and especially the group of players who put many hours of hard work and dedication into achieving this milestone.
Assupol TuksCricket once again showed up the winning culture at the University of Pretoria and TuksSport and proved that South African teams can win world finals and championships.
