One Week Till TuksCricket Compete to be the Best in the World

Posted on July 11, 2014

Red Bull Campus Cricket, which started in 2011, is a World Cup for university teams from 8 different countries. Last year the World Finals was hosted in Sri Lanka and India won the final against Pakistan to become the World Champions for 2013. TuksCricket will be representing South Africa at the tournament after they won the National Finals earlier this year.

This journey started for Tuks in December 2013 when they played against Maties in the USSA Final in Potchefstroom. The two finalists qualified to take part in the Red Bull Campus Cricket South Africa Finals in April, hosted at the Tuks Oval. TuksCricket convincingly won the three-match, T20, tournament 3-0 to become Team South Africa at the World Finals later this month.
In the capable hands of TuksCricket Head Coach, Pierre de Bruyn, and Assistant Coach, Chris van Noordwyk, the squad have spent the last six weeks putting in a lot of hard work into their preparation to be the best team at the tournament and to give themselves a chance to become the best university cricket team in the world.

Pierre de Bruyn commented, “As a squad we are even better prepared for the World Finals than we were for the qualifiers earlier this year. I believe that we have a very well balanced squad that will be able to dominate this year’s Varsity World Cup. The key for us will be understanding the conditions in the UK, which is different than our conditions at home.” de Bruyn, who played 10 seasons in the UK as a professional player, will know the conditions inside and out and players will be able to benefit from his experience and knowledge. “We have a lot of self-belief and have set ourselves very high goals for this tournament.”

The group stages will be played from 21 – 23 July in Oxford at Wormsley Cricket Ground and Aston Rowant Cricket Club. These groups will only be finalized at the draw on 20 July at Wormsley Cricket Ground. The semi-finals and final will take place at The Kia Oval in London on Saturday 26 July.

The other teams who will take part in the tournament are:

Australia – University of New South Wales
Bangladesh – University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh
England – Leeds Bradford MCCU
India – Rizvi College Mumbai
Pakistan – Karachi University
Sri Lanka – International College of Business and Technology
West Indies – TBC
