TuksCricket Junior Academy Play Against Pretoria Transnet Blind Cricket Club

Posted on June 02, 2014

This match was arranged by PTBCC for two reasons, firstly, seven of their players were nominated to play for South Africa at the Blind Cricket World Cup in November in Cape Town and matches against able-bodied cricketers is part of their preparation for this. The other reason they play against able-bodied cricket clubs is to increase exposure to blind cricket and to educate the public on how blind cricket is different to the cricket that we know.

It was a remarkable day as all of the TuksCricket Junior Academy players got involved in the match and were taught how to play blind cricket and were able to play with special glasses that they can't see out of to experience playing cricket when not being able to see anything. This gave the players the opportunity to learn about the other aspects of cricket and to be grateful for what they have. Even though Tuks lost by 22 runs the players came off the field with tremendous respect for the PTBCC as they learnt that even though you may be at some disadvantage you can make the best out of your situation and still play a game that you love.

Here is Nkateko Mathe, a TuksCricket Junior Academy player's view on the experience:

"On Sunday 1 June we played against the Pretoria Transnet Blind Cricket Club in a T20 match. The aim was for them to show us how their type of cricket was played and the spirit that it was played in. Even though we lost the game, as a team of able-bodied individuals we learnt so much about how fortunate we are to be able to see properly and to be able to see everything life has to offer. Having said that they also showed that they enjoy every moment on the field and show that life has no limitations because they believe in the saying that "life is what you make of it". We as the TuksCricket Junior Academy enjoy every moment because that's what life is about."
