I have been part of the CERU elephant demographic team since 2009 when the methodology to determine elephant herd age structure from aerial photographs was implemented. Since then, I have worked on establishing an extensive database of elephant measurements from >40 independent surveys conducted across southern and East Africa. These efforts correspond to the capture of measurements for >45,000 individual elephants based on ~15 photos taken per herd. This long-term, 15-year database forms a key component of current initiatives to transition from a manual, person-driven method to one based on artificial intelligence (AI). I am appointed to help with a smooth and accurate transition to machine-learning as the accuracy of AI is highly dependent on human input and adjustments in the initial phases.
