My name is Zinhle Makhanya, the chairperson of Commercii for the term 2024/25. I started my leadership journey in my final year of university, and while it is never too late to get started, I do wish that I had gotten into it sooner.

But before I go any further, what is Commercii and what do we do?

Commercii (pronounced kom-er-kie) is the EMS faculty house at UP. We serve as a gateway for students to engage in a well-rounded student life via cultural, sport, and outreach events held throughout the year. My advice to students is to take initiative and find out about the various opportunities for getting involved in student life; university does not have to begin and end with attending lectures.

Commercii also serves as an agent of change, working towards a more a diverse, inclusive and equitable university community (transformation). Furthermore, we aim to drive change in society by reaching out and giving back (outreach).

We are all aware that the Faculty of EMS offers an extensive range of degree programmes. Commercii, together with our eight sub-houses, provides active support in ensuring academic success and representation for EMS students. We also collaborate with the Faculty, Fly@UP, and various other academic groups to cultivate graduates who are uniquely skilled, and ready to make meaningful contributions to society.

My vision for my term is to increase awareness and visibility of Commercii so that students are aware of the various ways that we can be of assistance to them. Having you here, reading this note, is a step in the right direction. I’m happy you’re here!

My predecessor has worked tirelessly to help Commercii make its comeback. And now? It’s time for a Commercii takeover!
