School of the Arts

The University of Pretoria's School of the Arts strives to be the academic locus in South Africa that produces the most distinguished postgraduate researchers, prolific creative talent and performing artists, and provide access and opportunity across demographics to all talented students from all South African communities who wish to maintain standards of excellence at UP and thereby make a contribution. The School, housed in the Faculty of Humanities, is also home to the UP Symphony Orchestra, UP Symphonic Winds, Ovuwa Cultural Ensemble and the Tuks Camerata. Each ensemble strives to promote the diversity and richness that is true to the South African landscape, performing programmes that encapsulate all facets of music, from Western art music, to Traditional African and beyond. The ambience of the concert hall is an ever-changing experience for the listener, and each ensemble strives to entertain and stimulate the modern audience with the intention of changing emotional perceptions.
