MSc and PhD positions in UP Centre for Viral Zoonoses BEEZ research group

Posted on March 01, 2022

The Biosurveillance and Ecology of Emerging Zoonoses research group at the Centre for Viral Zoonoses, Department of Medical Virology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria, (https://www.up.ac.za/centre-for-viral-zoonoses) under the leadership of Prof Wanda Markotter, is an interdisciplinary team investigating small mammal species (mainly bats and non-volant mammals such as rodents) as hosts for zoonotic pathogens. We use serological and nucleic acid detection as part of biosurveillance in targeted animal populations in Southern Africa to investigate infection dynamics, host ecology and epidemiology. We embrace the One Health approach by investigating how human-, animal and environmental health are interlinked with specific focus on human-wildlife-livestock interactions, the ecology and movement of host species, and the impact of environmental health on bat health.

Our group has several exciting research opportunities in 2022 for motivated and hardworking students seeking to complete Masters or Doctoral degrees in Medical Virology with a focus on zoonotic pathogens.
