Dr Petrus Jansen van Vuren has been employed as a medical scientist in the Center for Emerging Zoonotic and Parasitic Diseases at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of the National Health Laboratory Service (NICD-NHLS) from mid-2006, and since 2015 has been the lead medical scientist responsible for the Arbovirus Reference Laboratory within the centre. Petrus completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the North-West University, up to a Master of Science (MSc) in Biochemistry, and his Doctorate degree (PhD) in Virology at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2011. Petrus was appointed as an Extraordinary Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria in July 2014 and re-appointed with the same designation in the Department of Medical Virology, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences in 2017.
Petrus’ interests include research on arboviruses and viral haemorrhagic fevers, with a special focus on the development and validation of diagnostic assays, pathogen discovery in high-risk vector species, virus ecology and epidemiology, pathogenesis, mobile laboratory outbreak response, biosafety and biosecurity.
