On 21 August 2023, the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship's senior research fellow Professor Daniel Bradlow appeared on CNN to reflect on 2023 BRICS Summit that was held in South Africa earlier in the month. 

The world is changing. Everybody recognises that there is a need for reform in global governance, and most countries are trying to reposition themselves and hedge their bets. So they see joining the BRICS as one option that they would like in order to have alternatives in terms of international relations. Having access to China is important, but many would also like to have access to the West. South Africa, for example, is hosting the BRICS Summit this year but is also hosting the meeting of AGOA, the African Growth and Opportunities Act with the US and African countries.
