IN THE MEDIA: Abuja Proclamation celebrates 30th anniversary

Posted on April 30, 2023

On 30 April 2023, Professor Adekeye Adebajo appeared on Newzroom Afrika to reflect on the progress made by African states 30 years after the Abuja Proclamation.

The Abuja Proclamation, adopted at the First Pan-African Conference on Reparations in Abuja in April 1993, celebrated its 30th anniversary in the last week of April 2023. The document underscored the need to undo the harm caused by centuries of slave labour and a century of colonial exploitation by Western nations.

Reflecting on some of the progress made, Professor Adebajo noted that

.. in terms of artefacts being returned, we have recently seen the governments of France, Britain, Germany making moves to return African artefacts to their rightful owners... but in terms of transforming institutions of global governance, like the World Bank, the IMF and giving Africa a seat on the UN Security Council, a permanent seat that is, that has not happened yet.
