From February to May 2023, the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship will be hosting Dr Irene Appeaning-Addo as a visiting fellow as part of the Urban Studies Foundation (USF) International Fellowship programme.

The International Fellowship programme is designed to enable early to mid-career urban scholars from the Global South to take an extended sabbatical (3-9 months) in a university or other academically accredited institution of their choosing worldwide

Dr Appeaning-Addo is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, Legon, and has a Doctorate in Geography and Resource Development. Dr Addo’s research focus is on the study of the architectural traditions in Africa, specifically in Ghana, urban housing studies, and postcolonial housing studies. She is also part of the Centre’s Mellon Foundation funded project titled “Entanglement, Mobility and Improvisation: Culture and the Arts in Contemporary African Urbanism and its Hinterlands”. She is a co-principal investigator on the project for the University of Ghana, one of four partner institutions in this project.

Dr Addo will focus on a research project titled ‘Everyday urbanism: The social use of space within the Accra Airport City in Ghana’, and will be mentored by Centre Director, Professor James Ogude
