Posted on March 06, 2023

On 3 February 2023, Professor Adekeye Adebajo was interviewed by Afshin Rattanshi on his show Going Underground, where he provided commentary on South Africa's responses to Russia and the conflict in the Ukraine.

Professor Adebajo discussed South Africa holding military drills with Russia amidst the war in Ukraine, why South Africa has not condemned Russia and ignored Western calls to do so.

Professor Adebajo further discussed his 2022 publication on the career of Boutros Boutros-Ghali, a book titled "Boutros Boutros-Ghali: Afro-Arab Prophet, Proselytiser, Pharoah, and Pope". The book examines the career of the first African and Arab United Nations (UN) Secretary General, and one of the most academically accomplished Secretary-Generals of the UN. Professor Adebajo reflected on why Africa neeeds to realise the dream of Pax-Africana in the post-Ukraine war world and whether pan-Africanism can take hold and resist foreign interference

In the interview, Professor Adebajo elaborated on the concept of Pax-Africana:

Pax-Africana is basically a concpet that was developed in 1967 by one of my intellectual mentors the late Kenyan academic Ali Mazuri, and the basic idea is that outsiders should stay outside the contient of Africa and let Africans resolve the own conflicts, and he explained that through the concept and priciple of contienetal jurisdiction... He further argued that through that through the principle of racial sovereignty, intra-African interventions by African states themselves in neighbouring countries was more legitimate than those by outsiders.
