IN THE MEDIA: Professor Daniel Bradlow on the Clement Manyathela Show

Posted on February 10, 2023

On 8 February 2023, Professor Daniel Bradlow was interviewed by Clement Manyathela on his show on radio 702, talking on the topic "How do state loans work?"

Professor Bradlow detailed how state loans work, why and how countries obtain loans, and also highlighted the difference between the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Responding to a question by Clement on countries response to the terms on conditions imposed by the international financial insitutions when granting loans to states, Professor Bradlow stated:

"The problem in many countries is that often they assume they have to accept what the IMF says and that it is not a negotiation. I think part of what our country and many African countires have to do is to say we need to negotiate what the terms should be [for loans] and make them share the burden more evenly. Many countries try, and [at] a negotiation you don't always win, but at least there should be a fairer outcome."
