REPORT: Urbanities Summer Institute 2022 at Makerere University

From 17 to 23 October 2022 Makerere University hosted the second Summer Institute of the Mellon Foundation funded project on African Urbanities. This Summer Institute brought together 26 participants from the four partner univeirsities: the Univeristy of Pretoria, Makerere Univeristy, the Univeristy of Ghana and the Univeristy of Cape Town. 

As part of the Summer Institute, Makerere University arranged an exhibition which included a Bwola cultural dance performance, dramatized poetry and an Art Exhibition at the Margaret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA). Professor George Kyeyune who welcomed the guests on behalf of the Dean of the School, Dr. Amanda Tumusiime, and he informed the visiting scholars that 2022 marked one hundered years from the founding of Makerere Univeristy. 

This project, which includes 12 early career scholars, aims to develop the scholarship of these scholars as they engage both intellectually and viscerally the intricate workings of urban spaces and their hinterlands by examining music, literature, visual arts, festivals, leisure sites and film. Over the course of the week, the Institute provided opportunities for scholars to share their ongoing work, included lectures form senior scholars, and provided time for mentorship between the early career scholars and senior scholars. 

The Summer Institute forms part of the reserach activities of the project titled Entanglement, Mobility and Improvisation: Culture and the Arts in Contemporary African Urbanism and its Hinterlands. This is a five year project that started in 2019, and is funded by the Mellon Foundation
