IN THE MEDIA: Dr Samuel Okunade on the Melilla Migrant Tragedy

On 1 July 2022, Dr Samuel Okunade was interviewed about the Melilla migrant tragedy by TRT World News. 

In late June 2022, at least 23 migrants, who were attempting to travel from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla, died in a conforntation with Moroccan officials as they attempted to enter the city. Dr Okunade discussed the security measures of both European and African border officials in preventing the migration of Africans between the continents. Dr Okunade further elaborated on the increasing criminalisation of African migrants, and the narrowing of migration channels for Africans that are resulting in increasing conflicts at borders.
