This year's Law Career Fair was meticulously planned to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the areas of specialisation offered by employers, as well as for employers to engage students in available opportunities such as vacation work, candidate attorney programs, and other graduate recruitment opportunities.
On March 4, 2025, Rautenbach Hall at the University of Pretoria's Hatfield Campus was bustling with excitement as students visited the several employer stalls, which primarily featured law firms, government agencies, regulatory authorities, advocacy organisations, and commercial banks. This event, a collaboration between the Faculty of Law and the Career Services office, provided a dynamic platform for employers to engage with students and graduates seeking career opportunities in the legal field. Students were also given the chance to broaden their career plans and meet with company representatives.
During the event, graduate recruitment specialists advised students on how to present themselves in a way that is relevant to the company's needs, stand out from other candidates, sell their unique skills, experience in student leadership roles, and package their resumes. They also gave interesting presentations and offered career planning and application advice to help students make informed choices.
The 2025 Career Fair was successful due to effective collaboration between the Faculty of Law and Career Services, resulting in a well-organised and impactful event for students and prospective employers. Employer representatives and students engaged positively, exhibiting a shared commitment to career development and industry connection.
It was encouraging to see some UP Law third and final-year students manning the exhibition stands of the law firms with which they will complete their candidate attorney program, as well as alumni who are now working in those respective firms. The law career expo is an opportunity that no student should miss.
For students, the Career Fair was more than simply a networking opportunity; it was a step towards finding work and determining their career goals. Employers were allowed to meet with some of South Africa's sharpest legal minds, reaffirming the University of Pretoria's reputation as a premier legal education institution.
As the legal sector evolves, activities like the UP Law Career Fair help to bridge the gap between academia and the real world, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the world of work in future legal profession.
