A Delightful Tradition: Faculty Social

Posted on September 12, 2024

The Law Faculty at the University of Pretoria held their yearly faculty social, allowing staff members to reunite after the first-semester break and feast together. The highly anticipated event provided a welcoming environment for staff members to enjoy delicious cuisine and good company. This is a casual gathering hosted by the Faculty to encourage excellent employee relations, a sense of community, and collaboration among academic and support staff members. It is a flagship event because it encourages academics to connect with colleagues outside of the official work setting, nurturing a more supportive working environment with the UP Faculty of Law.

This year's faculty social was a collaborative effort with JUTA Publishing, who had the opportunity to connect with our academic staff about their offering of legal textbooks. They also discussed the innovative improvements they have implemented using digital platforms for academics. JUTA, which is well-known for its contributions to legal education and resources, expressed excitement about this year's collaboration with the faculty on its annual social event. Ms. Baphiwe Ngubeni, a representative from JUTA reiterated their commitment to improving the educational experience and the importance of ongoing reciprocal collaborations to ensure the availability of high-quality academic materials for effective teaching and learning.

The afternoon's highlight was Dr. Elvis Folaka's birthday party, who is the Manager - Childrens Rights Unit at the Centre for Human Rights and a known member of the faculty. Dr. Folaka celebrated this memorable day by sharing a delicious cake with all attendees.

Throughout the event, faculty staff members enjoyed a variety of delectable soups, freshly baked bread, and drinks. The faculty social provided a reprieve from the everyday academic grind, offering a place for relaxation, connection, conversation, and refreshment. It was a reminder of the value of community, celebration, and support in the academic setting. Events like this not only increase a sense of belonging, but also foster deeper professional and personal relationships among faculty, students, and staff within UP Law.

The faculty social was hugely successful. Attendees left with bright smiles, full hearts, and a restored sense of community.
