The School of Public Management and Administration hosted the annual Prof Chris Thornhill Prestige Breakfast Lecture on 14 August 2019. The speaker for the morning was Prof Tania Ajam, who is an an academic, public policy analyst, economist and an SPMA PhD in Public Management graduate with broad experience in the design, analysis and implementation of fiscal policy, intergovernmental fiscal relations and government-wide monitoring and evaluation systems.
The theme for all SPMA events for 2019 is "The future of public administration scholarship and practice: access, adapt, advance". The audience consisted of academics, practitioners, postgraduate students and members of the advisory board of the SPMA, as well as alumni.
In her presentation, entitled "Between the devil and the deep blue sea: Accounting officers, chief financial officers and state capture", Prof Ajam addressed issues relating to living in interesting times, the international and domestic crises in government, the hallmark of state capture, and underlying drivers of government failure. She also gave an interesting account of how to "future-proof" the South African state.
