SPMA hosts visiting Brazilian academic

Posted on May 28, 2019

Mr Arthur Catraio, a PhD candidate from the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE-FGV), worked as a visiting academic at the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) in UP’s Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences from October 2018 until May 2019.

This was made possible by the support of the CAPES Foundation of the Ministry of Education of Brazil. During his period in the School, he worked on his PhD thesis, entitled ‘The Political Economy of Chronic Hunger and Human Development in sub-Saharan Africa (1990-2015)’.

According to Mr Catraio, “the SPMA has provided a world-class environment for research, many fruitful interactions with internationally renowned experts in the development of African countries, and represents a venue of excellence for the deepening of bilateral academic cooperation between Brazil and South Africa”. He further noted that the special Africana collection provided by the library archive has been a rich source of historical and political data for empirical research regarding the contemporary African context. His research is focused on public administration, comparative politics, and human development in sub-Saharan Africa.
