Luvo Manyonga proved Friday night by winning the gold medal in the long jump at the IAAF World Championships in London that nothing, but absolutely nothing is impossible in the sport if you are prepared to put your mind to a specific goal and seriously work towards it.

The Tuks/HPC-athlete won in a time of 12.92s which is 0.02s faster than the record set by Corien Botha in 1998. Unfortunately, the wind from behind was measured at 2.01m/s which means it was too strong by 0.01m/s for Steenkamp’s time to be official.

Last night in Ostrava Rikenette Steenkamp has done what she has been threatening to do the whole season and that was to dip under 13 seconds in the 100m-hurdles. She is only the second South African athlete to do so.

South Africa’s, Wayde van Niekerk and Clarence Munyai, probably made athletics history last night at the Golden Spike Meeting in Ostrava by becoming the first athletes of the same country to set new world bests in different categories but in the same race.

Thando Roto proved he is on track to run a second sub ten second time in the 100 metres in the next few weeks when he won the 100 metres in 10.11s on Saturday at the Bilboa-meeting in Spain.

The good news for South African athletics fans is that the world's best long jumper, Luvo Manyonga, has only sustained a slight ankle injury and is already busy with rehabilitation.
