Prof Elsabe Taljard invited to attend Oxford Global Language Symposium in Oxford

Posted on October 20, 2015

Prof Elsabé Taljard was recently invited by Oxford University Press, UK to attend the Oxford Global Languages Symposium in Oxford, UK from 23 -24 September. Prof Taljard is the Language Champion for Northern Sotho within the Oxford Global Languages programme. The task of the Language Champion is to provide strategic advice and support the development of content, helping the language community to grow. She is assisted by a language manager and other language experts – prof Danie Prinsloo is also involved in the project and provides expert lexicographic guidance to the OUP team. The aim of this OUP initiative is to make large quantities of quality linguistic and lexicographic data freely available to lesser-resourced and digitally under-represented languages. The idea is to give these languages a vibrant and dynamic online presence by the development of new digital tools and resources. What makes this initiative exceptional is the emphasis that is placed on the involvement of the language community in that speakers can suggest new content, ask questions and contribute to a living dictionary of the language. Two language sites have already been launched, and these happen to be two South African languages, i.e. Northern Sotho (Sepedi) and Zulu. These sites are available at zu.oxforddictionaries.com for Zulu and nso.oxforddictionaries.com for Northern Sotho.
