Prof Danie Prinsloo and his two sons Daniel and Jakobus teamed up to present a paper at the prestigious eLex conference, recently held at the Herstmonceux castle, Sussex, United Kingdom. Prof Danie provided the expert lexicographic input, while son Daniel did the programming and Jacobus took responsibility for the computational engineering parts. Their paper entitled A writing assistant as support tool for electronic dictionaries reports on ground-breaking research on the design and development of a computational phrase builder for languages which lack electronic linguistic resources, using Northern Sotho (Sepedi) as a case study. The tool assists users of an electronic dictionary to produce complicated grammatical structures while consulting an electronic dictionary. The tool is unique in the sense that it makes use of the user’s existing knowledge and combines it with the generation power of the computational tool, providing advanced support for the dictionary user. Constructed phrases can furthermore be verified by comparing them to data contained in an electronic data corpus. The paper was extremely well received by international lexicographers attending the conference.
