2015-2017 Workshop Feedback Overview
The Digital Awareness Workshops were conducted as part of the National Health Initiative (NHI) pilot site study. There are 8 NHI pilot sites: 1 in each province except for Gauteng and Western Cape, and 2 in KwaZulu-Natal. The workshops were aligned with the 7 pillars of the Digital Opportunities Strategy run by the ISAD&R branch at the DTPS:
- Pillar 1: Human Capital Development - Building an e-skills base in South Africa
- Pillar 2: Local digital content development
- Pillar 3: Innovation and digital entrepreneurship
- Pillar 4: ICT applications
- Pillar 5: e-Government
- Pillar 6: Research & Development
- Pillar 7: e-Awareness and Inclusion (capacity building)
To address the 7 pillars but also to develop content for training, the ACEIE developed the Digital Wellness toolkit in 2015. The toolkit consists of 9 books that can be used at different levels for training:
- Secondary schools (teachers and learners)
- Primary schools (teacher and parents/learners)
- Community projects
- Workshops (facilitators and participants)
The selection of books used most often for the Digital Awareness and Wellness workshops were the Resources and Concepts Book, Manual for Workshop Participants and Facilitators.
The primary aims of the workshops were to:
- Sensitize workshop participants to the opportunities and threats associated with digital citizenship;
- Equip workshop participants with the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes they would need to effectively facilitate workshops on digital safety and information ethics matters ;
- Create opportunities for workshop participants to critically discuss digital issues like the ones mentioned earlier with one another;
- Equip workshop participants with the requisite knowledge, skills and values to survive and thrive in the digital world; and
- Introduce workshop participants to ways in which they could help others in their particular spheres of interest to become safe and responsible digital citizens.
Outcomes for workshop participants:
- Awareness of both opportunities created by and the dangers inherent in the use of digital technology;
- Know and can explain to others what the terms digital citizenship, digital security, digital safety, digital crime, and information ethics mean;
- Are critically aware of and can facilitate critical discussions on digital issues addressed in the workshop; and
- Are committed to the safe and responsible use of information communications technology and the development of responsible digital citizens in their particular spheres of influence.
The format of the workshops included 3 approaches:
- Plenary sessions were used to introduce the theme, clarify concepts, stimulate discussion or critical reflection and tie up loose ends.
- Readings were used as introductions to either plenary discussions or group activities and are meant to stimulate critical reflection of the issues raised in the reading.
- Group activities were given participants the opportunity of debating issues raised and/or using their knowledge and understanding of issues raised to identify and solve actual and imaginary problems related to the use of information and information communications technology.
In order to gauge insight into the participants’ workshop experience the following 10 questions were asked:
- What did you expect to learn from this workshop?
- Did the workshop provide what you hoped for or expected?
- Why did you choose to attend this event?
- Do you think that what you have learnt here will be useful for you in future?
- Where are you most likely to apply your new knowledge?
- In which medium would you prefer to have the info accessible afterwards?
- Are you happy with how the workshop was organised in terms of communication, catering etc.?
- Are you happy with the way the programme has been designed in terms of content?
- Would you like to be added to the ANIE mailing list? (not for reporting purposes due to confidentiality)
