Access System

In the first semester of 2015, the University of Pretoria (UP) initiated a project to upgrade the out-dated access card system.

The first phase of this project was completed towards the end of 2016, and the second phase is now underway and expected to be finalised during 2017.

The new system will use dual verification, whereby the smart access card is used in conjunction with biometrics (fingerprint scanning). This will greatly improve security.

New smart access cards, compatible with both the existing magnetic strip card readers and the new proximity (contactless) card readers, will be issued to all UP staff, students and contractors during the first semester of 2017. These cards will ensure the safety and protection of all card-holders during the switch over.

The new system will be installed and implemented in a phased manner according to a predefined schedule.

Multiple teams will begin work on this project in the next few months. Measures will be taken to fast-track the installation and minimise disruptions. However, disruptions may take place and we thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.

Regular updates will be communicated to you as the project progresses.
