Mrs Tanya Hill

Teaching Excellence Laureate Award

Tanya Hill is a senior lecturer in the Department of Taxation within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate taxation modules and brings over 20 years of combined academic, training, and corporate experience to the table. Hill is a chartered accountant (SA) and holds an MCom (Taxation) (cum laude), a BComHons (Accounting Sciences), and a BCom (Accounting Sciences).

Currently, Hill serves as programme coordinator and lecturer for the BComHons specialising in taxation and continuously supervises several MCom students. Her previous responsibilities in the Department included lecturing and coordinating modules at various undergraduate levels. Hill is deeply committed to education and is passionate about empowering students to reach their full potential through innovative teaching, development, and assessment methods.

An emerging researcher, Hill focuses on teaching innovation, particularly the use of technology in education. She has published in accredited peer-reviewed journals and incorporates virtual reality (VR) into her teaching to support the development of pervasive skills. For her pioneering use of VR in taxation education, she received the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences Team Teaching and Learning Excellence Award and the UP Institutional Collaborative Team Teaching and Learning Excellence Laureate Award in 2022.

Hill loves watching individuals develop and grow as they engage in and take responsibility for their own learning. This philosophy inspires her teaching and research. Her passion for innovation continues to grow through active research and international collaboration. Most recently, she co-developed a simulated SARS eFiling platform, offering students hands-on experience with tax submissions in a safe, educational environment. For this project, Hill and Professor Anculien Schoeman received the Faculty’s Team Teaching and Learning Excellence Award and the UP Institutional Collaborative Team Teaching Excellence Laureate Award in 2024.

Hill is also involved in community engagement at the UP Mamelodi Campus, where she coordinates a project that enables the BComHons (Taxation) students to provide tax and business training to local small business owners. This initiative helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, while making a meaningful impact on the community.
