Awards Archive

The Academic Achievers Awards at the University of Pretoria are a longstanding tradition that celebrates excellence in research, teaching, innovation, and societal impact. Their evolution reflects UP’s commitment to recognising academic achievement in all its dimensions. In 2014, the Teaching and Learning Laureate Awards were integrated into the programme, expanding recognition to include pedagogical innovation. The following year introduced the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award and the Community Engagement Award, celebrating scholarly publishing and real-world impact. In 2016, amid national student protests, the awards became a symbol of resilience, honouring academics who ensured continuity in teaching, research, and service.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought new relevance to the awards, highlighting UP’s leadership in public health and science communication. That year also marked the launch of the Science Communication Excellence Awards in partnership with The Conversation Africa. In 2024, the RE.SEARCH Magazine Award was introduced to honour departments and faculties that consistently communicate their research through UP’s flagship publication.

Today, the Academic Achievers Awards continue to evolve, showcasing UP’s collective drive to solve complex challenges and shape a better future — locally, continentally, and globally.
