Study

The Department of Accounting is responsible for managing the BCom in Accounting Sciences and PGDip in Accounting Sciences programs offered at the Hatfield Campus. These programmes are accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants as part of its education requirements for qualification as a CA(SA). The University of Pretoria has a proud record in respect of the performance of our students in the Intitial Test of Competence (formerly the Qualifying Examination) of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Furthermore, we offer a variety of financial accounting modules which contribute to various academic programmes, as compulsory modules or elective modules. 

We are well equipped to offer master's and doctoral degrees in accounting. The Department established the highly respected accounting research journal Meditari in the mid-nineties of the previous century.

The BCom in Accounting Sciences degree offered at the University of Pretoria is accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) as part of its education and training requirements to qualify as a CA(SA).

What is a chartered accountant – CA (SA)?

The Chartered Accountant qualification is the highest professional accountancy qualification in South Africa. A person who has completed the education and training requirements of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) needs to register as a member in order to use the designation CA(SA). A chartered accountant is an expert in the fields of financial accounting, external auditing, financial management, management accounting and taxation. Chartered accountants are characterised by their multidisciplinary and analytical abilities and their systematic and logical approach to problem solving.

Academic Offering
 
The Department of Accounting offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, postgraduate diplomas and certificates. A wide variety of short courses are also offered by the Department.
