Appointment of a new Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Humanities

The University is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof MME (Maxi) Schoeman as Deputy Dean: Postgraduate Studies and Ethics in the Faculty of Humanities, with effect from 1 March 2016.

Prof Schoeman obtained an MA in Political Science at the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) (now the University of Johannesburg) and a PhD in International Relations at the University of Wales (Aberystwyth). 

She was appointed as professor in and Head of the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP) in November 2000. Since her appointment at UP, she has also held positions as Acting Head: Department of Philosophy, from 2002 until 2004, and as Chair of the Core Social Sciences Cluster in the Faculty of Humanities until her recent appointment as Deputy Dean. She has been a member of the University Council since 2014.

Prof Schoeman has served as a guest lecturer at a number of universities in Europe, North America and Latin America and was awarded the Claude Ake Visiting Chair at the University of Uppsala in 2014. She currently serves on the editorial boards of several local and international academic journals.

Prof Schoeman served as a member of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) – chairing its African chapter (AFPREA) from 2006 to 2009 – and the British International Studies Association (BISA). She was a member of council of the European Communities Study Association, Southern African chapter (ECSASA), from 2002 to 2008.  She has been serving as a member of the advisory board of the African Peace Network (APN) Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) in New York since 2012 and as a board member of the South Africa-Russia Dialogue Forum since 2013. She serves as Deputy Chair of the Institute for Global dialogue, Co-deputy Chair of the South African Council on Foreign Relations and as a trustee of the Institute for Security Studies.

Prof Schoeman has supervised an impressive number of master’s and doctoral students to completion and her extensive publication record includes books, book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals.

The University would like to congratulate Prof Schoeman on her appointment and wish her well in her future career as a Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Humanities and a member of the University’s senior management team.
