African Philosophy at UP's Philosophy Department

March 2016

African Philosophy has been gradually introduced in teaching at the Department of Philosophy since 1990. Over the last couple of years the department has engaged in experimentation with new approaches to the inclusion of African Philosophy in the curriculum.

At our department, the three undergraduate years are each divided into four modules and the one Honours year in eight modules. Together that gives 24 modules of core Philosophy course work taught by the department. In 2016, the curriculum of ten modules follow an integrated approach in one way or another, three modules are dedicated exclusively to African Philosophy and seven are dedicated to Western Philosophy. This is not a set quota, but will change as curriculum experimentation continues.

The department has given supervision in African Philosophy for Honours mini-dissertations, for Masters dissertations and for Doctorates. Members of staff have acted as examiners of post-graduate research in African Philosophy and as reviewers for journal articles on African Philosophy. Our students' work is subject to external examination, not only from lecturers at other South African universities, but also from academics at other African universities.
