In memoriam: Professor Noel Chabani Manganyi

The University of Pretoria (UP) would like to express its deep sadness at the passing of Professor Noel Chabani Manganyi, who died on 31 October 2024, aged 84. Professor Manganyi served as a UP Vice-Principal from 2003 to 2006 and was a UP Laureate, the University’s highest honour. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Research Foundation (NRF) when he was a research fellow at the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship at UP.

Featured Event: Seminar on World Food Day, 16 October 2024

In commemoration of World Food Day, the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship (CAS) hosted a seminar on 16 October 2024 at the University of Pretoria. The event, led by the Food Systems Research Network for Africa (FSNet-Africa), focused on sharing a research agenda aimed at advancing the realisation of the right to food across Africa. FSNet-Africa is a flagship project of the African Research Universities Alliance Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Food Systems (ARUA-SFS). The seminar highlighted critical research priorities and innovative strategies for transforming research into impactful, real-world outcomes.

COMING SOON: The Conservation of Violence by Tafadzwa Mushonga

In 2025, Dr Tafadzwa Mushonga will publish a monograph titled "The Conservation of Violence: Statecraft, Forests, and Coloniality". The book will be available for pre-order from 23 June 2025 on the Routledge website. "The Conservation of Violence" discusses the governance of protected forests in Zimbabwe to spotlight the structural and operational ways in which violent tactics are produced, employed and sustained to promote nature conservation. Dr Mushonga is a Research Fellow and co-leader of the Environmental Humanities project at the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship.
