…AND THE WINNER IS?  #probono.org #awards

On Thursday 21 November 2019 Pro-Bono.Org hosted their annual awards evening at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg. Pro-Bono.Org is an NGO that works with the private legal profession to provide pro bono legal services to the indigent members of the community.

In recognition of the contribution made by aspiring legal practitioners, Pro-Bono.Org pays tribute to law students that dedicate their final year of studies to pro bono legal services. This year, the University of Pretoria Law Clinic nominated Mr Jarrod van der Heever for the award of outstanding student at a University Law Clinic and we are proud to announce that he won!

Jarrod joined the University of Pretoria Law Clinic as a student in 2019, where he duly served the best interests of his clients. He was the winner of three prizes at the UP Law Clinic awards evening. He won the “Best student in Practical Law (PRR) 400” prize, awarded to the top achieving student in the module, the “Firm of the Year” prize, as a member of the top achieving firm at the law clinic during 2019 and he was voted the “Firm Favourite” by his fellow firm members.

To achieve this, he logged several additional hours at the Law Clinic to provide access to justice to the indigent members of our community. At the Law Clinic, Jarrod worked under the supervision of Ms. Samantha Arlene Yell.

"Jarrod was a dynamic student dedicated to his learning and development at the Law Clinic. He is a worthy recipient of these awards."

Ms. Yell, together with Mr. Frik Grobler, work as supervising attorneys with the final year law students at the Law Clinic.

"Working with you at the Law Clinic has been nothing short of my most valuable experience at University. Your guidance has always been appreciated and I can safely say I learnt more under your supervision than any subject has ever taught me. You have been inspirational and I just wanted to say Thank You." Jarrod van der Heever

In closing, Jarrod’s contribution to the University of Pretoria Law Clinic’s pro bono legal services, through our Clinical Legal Education (CLE) methodology, is commendable and he has emerged a final year law student who is “Fit for Practice”.
