In his welcoming speech Mr Franciscus Haupt, the Director of the Law Clinic, emphasised that throughout Judge Mlambo’s illustrious career – which included serving as Judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal and as President of the Labour Courts of South Africa – he has always regarded access to legal representation by the disadvantaged of the utmost importance. Judge Mlambo founded clinics at various labour courts and intends to do the same at the High Court divisions he now presides over. He was also the Chairperson of the Board of Legal Aid South Africa, with whom the Clinic has had a cooperation agreement since 2000.

Judge Mlambo expressed his admiration for what the Clinic has achieved and shared some thoughts on future cooperation between the courts and the Faculty of Law with those present. These included Deputy Dean, Prof Anton Kok, Public Law’s Prof Pieter Carstens, who is responsible for the annual Certificate Course in Trial Advocacy presented by members of the Judiciary and Pretoria Bar, Dr Philip Stevens, as well as a number of Law Clinic attorneys and candidate attorneys.
