The Unit does not offer a full honours course in Creative Writing. The departments of Afrikaans, English and African Languages each offer a module in Creative Writing as part of their respective Honours programmes.
The M.A. degree consists of two parts: a creative manuscript in any of the following languages: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, Setswana, isiNdebele, Sepedi, French and German. This counts for 75% of your total mark. You are also required to complete a dissertation of limited scope on a related topic. The dissertation counts for 25% of your mark.
To be eligible for the Master’s degree, you must hold a four-year or, preferably, an Honours degree. You will also be required to submit a portfolio of your creative writing as part of your application. The portfolio will need to demonstrate that you have a flair for creative writing.
At the doctoral level the Unit expects a creative work of exceptional aesthetic merit as well as a substantial and sophisticated academic component.
To be eligible for the PhD, you must hold a Master’s degree. You will also be required to submit a portfolio of your creative writing as part of your application. The portfolio will need to demonstrate that you are a gifted and experienced writer.
