Raised in the Netherlands, Prof van Oort trained as a science teacher and taught before studying classical languages and theology. He has taught at the universities of Utrecht, Nijmegen and Pretoria, and has been a visiting professor at a number of other universities. He is a Patristics scholar and his special field of study is Augustine and Manichaean Christianity. He is a member of a number of international patristic, historical and theological societies.
