The USSA Swimming Executive and Kovsie Aquatics under stalwart Marco Markgraaf’s leadership presented an amazing 2019 USSA National Swimming Championships at the University of Free State – Kovsies pool this past weekend. The positive contributions by USSA Aquatics chairperson Carol Adams and Markgraaf cannot be under estimated in what was without a doubt the best USSA National Swimming Championships presented in the recent past.
The tournament, which began on Friday and concluded on Saturday, saw a number of USSA swimming records take a tumble by students from a vast array of universities in what was without a doubt a highly charged competition.
The Top Male performance went to Alaric Basson from Nelson Mandela Bay for his 100m Breaststroke effort, while South Africa’s “golden girl” Tatjana Schoenmaker from University of Pretoria claimed the Top Female performance for her 200m Breaststroke effort.
The significance of the USSA Swimming Championships cannot be underscored with a dearth of athletes who have not only represented South Africa at an international level but many from our neighboring countries including Seychelles, Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe, all of whom are studying at various institutions locally.
The tournament concluded with a glittering awards function in the beautiful Centenary Hall on the Free State University campus on Saturday evening.
