USSA Rowing Sprints

Posted on March 25, 2014

The atmosphere was great with clubs staying in huge sheds together and sharing meals at a communal hall, which was different to previous years but increased the overall spirit of the regatta.

Tuks took down 29 athletes, with a mixture of some of the top rowers in the country down to first time participants. We entered 36 events of which we made it into 30 of the finals and came out on top in 11 of these races. We took top honours in the men's A four and men's A single (two of the most prestigious events to win). Our B division women had some excellent racing dominating the quad, four and double by taking first place in all these events.

Our greatest rival university for the weekends racing was The University of Cape Town, who pushed us to the limit in many of the races, which lead to some very close racing between the two universities.

Even with our small team Tuks managed to take 2nd place on the overall points table with our men placing 2nd and women placing 3rd overall.

Tuks also walked away with a lot of the Blues and Grudge awards:

Men:

Blues eight: David Hunt, Jake Green, Gareth Maybery, Katlego Sotsaka

Grudge eight: Stuart Chamberlain, Jason Hunter

Blues Double: Devon Miller

Grudge Double: James Brittain, Michael Voerman

Women

Blues Double: Leigh-Ann Norton

Grudge Double: Lindsey Davis

A great weekend was had by all, with a top effort being put in by all of the athletes.
