Presenter: Jacob Modiba (Anglo American Platinum)

Title: Harnessing GIS for Climate-Resilient Mining and Sustainable Communities

Biography:
A seasoned strategist and registered GISc professional with over 19 years of experience in the mining industry, Jacob currently leads the Sustainability department at Anglo American Platinum. His strengths include driving ESG strategies, systems leadership, and programme management. With expertise in property development, financial analysis, and commercial negotiations, he’s played a pivotal role in managing high-value transactions and sustainability initiatives within mining.

Jacob holds a BSc. and Honours in GeoInformatics from the University of Pretoria, as well as Master’s degrees in Information Technology (MIT) and Business Administration (MBA). He is an active UP and GIBS alumnus with a strong track record in operational performance, technical systems’ governance, and sustainability impact management. His leadership has consistently delivered value through innovation and strategic insight

In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Jacob serves on the board of the Blue Bulls Company and is passionate about mentoring, intrapreneurship, and fostering partnerships to advance the Sustainable Development Goals
