Plant Science Honours Excursion 2015: Ezemvelo Nature Reserve Bronkhorstspruit

Posted on June 09, 2015

The Ezemvelo Nature Reserve is situated on the border between Gauteng and Mpumalanga in the Rand Highveld Grassland and Loskopdam Mountain Bushveld. The reserve is approximately 11 000 ha of which 400 ha is covered by grassland and 600 ha by savannah, an excellent locality for the students to get to know their tree- and grass species. The group enjoyed the tranquillity of the Hikers Huts next to the “Grootspruit”, far from civilisation.  They even had the opportunity to cool down in the otter dam in front of the huts after an exhausting hike.  Not only was their plant knowledge tested, but also their cooking skills, as each cooking team was responsible for keeping the rest of their fellow students tummies happy and full. On Sunday everybody returned home, exhausted, a little wiser and best friends.
