Mr Chris de Jager

BSc (Hons) Soil Science Northwest University

MSc Soil Science -UP

My field of expertise is Soil Chemistry. The University of Pretoria is located within 50 km of the major industrial, mining and agricultural areas of South Africa and therefore my research focus has been on industrial and mining impacts on soil and the ongoing search for sustainable solution.

I was project leader of a study on the phyto-availability of vanadium, chrome and nickel from basic oxygen furnace slag and also project leader of a Water Research Commission project on the co-disposal and weathering gasification ash. Apart from this, I am actively involved in the mine water irrigation focus of the Soils and Water Group of the Department as well as the ongoing research on the sustainable utilization of sewage sludge. I am currently also involved in the African Soil Microbiology Project. Smaller but equally interesting recent projects are the role of manganese in buffering redoximorphic features in soil and the transformation applied zinc in soil.

Apart from this, I am manager the Soils laboratory of the Department, have a keen interest in analytical chemistry and the development of new analytical methods and also the coordinator of the Environmental Soil Science Honours programme.
