Dr Rechelle Jacobs is a “hybrid” academic, teaching distribution theory at an undergraduate level, supervises Honours projects and forms part of the Masters in Data Science team at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Her research interests are in education and finance and she was awarded a PhD in Statistics in 2022. Her Masters and PhD thesis are bound by non-disclosure agreements and focussed on quantifying the banks financial loss given default (MSc) and using survival analysis techniques to model time to single, composite and repeated events. The research expands to the modelling covariate effects on time to recurring defaults considering discontinuous periods of risk, complete case recurring default events and the scenario where possible terminal events are censored (PhD). Prior to the 8 years in the academia, she spent 15 years in the financial services sector where she worked as a Business Manager and Quantitative Analysts for three of the big banks in South Africa. Rechelle served on the Teaching and Learning as well as the Research committees of the Natural Science faculty at UWC and will serve on the Media and Recruitment committee in 2023. She would like to establish a statistics consultancy at UWC's Department of Statistics and Population Studies and plans to pursue research suitable for publication. She is passionate about community work and has recently registered an NGO with the mission to equip the marginalised in society with the skills to make informed decisions. She is married to Nigel, they have two children and serve as the pastoral family at a local church in a community situated in close proximity to UWC. |
