Dr. Yanga Bavuma started his career at Rhodes University where completed his bachelors degree and his honours degree with funding from the Lelona Fufu Memorial Bursary. He then went to do the rest of his post graduate education, under the supervision of Dr. Francesco Russo, at the University of Cape Town, where he was funded by the Mark Shuttleworth Scholarship for His PhD.

He then did post-doctoral research at the University of Cape Town, under the supervision of Prof.Themba Dube. He is now a permanent lecturer in the department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town.

His research interests lie in algebraic topology, topological groups, general topology and dynamical systems. He is an active member of the research group “Topology, Algebra and Dynamical systems” that forms part of the Italy-South Africa Research Project.

His goals include involving South Africa more in the international research community and making mathematics more intuitively accessible to the South African population.
