Dr Georgina Rakotonirainy

Georgina, who hails from Madagascar, spent the last nine years far away from home in a beautiful country to boot. After completing her undergraduate studies and obtaining a postgraduate diploma at the University of Antananarivo, she received a bursary to attend a structured master program at AIMS South Africa in 2013. During this program, she was exposed to the field of Operations Research and became fascinated by this field. This had led her to pursue a full master's research in the field and obtained the degree in 2016 from the University of Cape Town. The same year, she joined the Department of Industrial Engineering, Stellenbosch University, as a PhD candidate.

Georgina completed her PhD in 2018 and accepted a lecturing post in the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Cape Town which started in February 2019. Her main research area lies in Operations Research, focusing on the application of mathematical optimization techniques to solve complex decision-making problems. She has a particular interest in the field of cutting and packing problems, and her research is centered on the use and development of metaheuristic approaches.
